It is a rare privilege to be a funeral director, to stand in a sensitive position at a crucial time in the midst of a bereaved family, knowing that the quality of our service will help that family through one of the most difficult times in their lives.

As Market Weightons longest established funeral director, Layton and Sons are able to offer a personal and dignified service in the areas of Market Weighton, Holme Upon Spalding Moor, Beverly, Driffield and all surrounding villages. Being a family run business we can easily provide such a service without the larger business constraints that other multi-national funeral corporations work with.

We pride ourselves in the care and attention we provide to families going through a difficult time. These values have been passed down to a second and third generation of our family. Our aim is to offer bereaved families a truly personal service tailored to their individual needs, and this is why we don’t work set hours or days, we want to be there to help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Our long standing establishment within the local community brings a great sense of pride to everyone involved in Layton’s. This is why generations of families have come to trust in our professional service that we can give their loved ones in our funeral homes.

Established in the 1880’s by the Layton’s family, Layton and Sons is Market Weighton’s longest established and most experienced funeral directors. The Layton’s family and Maurice Sharp often worked together and the two family funeral directors supported and helped each other for many years. This explains why in 1994, when the Layton’s family retired, Maurice Sharp was the only successor whom they trusted to upkeep the good name and family values of Layton and Sons Funeral Directors.

In 2001 we renovated 4 church side, Market Weighton, enabling the provision of a private chapel of rest. This is a respectful funeral home where final arrangements can be made and families are able to say goodbye to their loved ones.

In 1996 Maurice’s daughter, Gill, joined him in running both Maurice Sharp funeral directors and Layton and Sons Funeral Directors. Under the care and tutelage of her father, accompanied by hard work, Gill has become a well-liked and trusted member of the Market Weighton communitie. In the year 2000, the decision was took to hand both funeral directors over to Gill, with Maurice pursuing a consultancy role. Today Gill and her husband Stephen, oversee every aspect of all funeral arrangements.

More recently Gill and Steve’s son Luke has joined them in working for Layton and sons funeral directors. Luke has become the 3rd generation of Maurice’s family to uphold the traditional values of the local funeral director. In addition to on the job training Luke will also be studying a number of NAFD certified qualifications in order to allow Layton and Sons funeral directors to remain at the forefront of modern funeral directing practices.

We have come a long way since the early days of funeral directing in Market Weighton, Holme Upon Spalding Moor and the surrounding communities, however we never forget the simple principles of care and dignity that are at the heart of what we do. To complement our ultra-professional staff and specalist funeral homes we take great pride in constantly re-investing. Ensuring that every aspect of our service is conducted at paramount professionalism using industry specialised equipment.
